Margaret and David visit with Danny Bobrow about Persuasion without Pressure.

Have you ever found yourself talking to your team, convinced your brilliant solution was exactly what they needed, only to see their eyes glaze over?

That phenomenon is what Danny calls “expert override.” As the creator of the Persuasion Blueprint, Danny holds dual MBAs from the University of Chicago and KUL in Belgium. He is also an ultra-endurance athlete and mountaineer who understands that reaching the summit requires teamwork, not brute force.  He’s also the founder of Climb for a Cause, a nonprofit that offers individuals and organizations a unique opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to “giving back,” that is, to share the fruits of their success with those less fortunate.

In this episode, Danny shares insights into how leaders can transform everyday conversations into engines of connection and collaboration.

The Three Pillars of Persuasive Leadership

True persuasion is not about convincing someone to abandon their beliefs. It is about engaging people to take desirable action without coercion. To achieve this, Danny outlines three essential, sequential steps.

Caring: Closing the Care Gap

We often assume our teams know we care about their success. But there is frequently a massive divide between our intentions and how we are actually perceived by our counterparts. Danny calls this the “care gap.”

Minimizing this gap requires high emotional intelligence. It means embracing empathy and matching the other person’s energy. Throwing blind, cheerleader-style enthusiasm at a quiet, concerned employee will only alienate them. When you align your passion with what actually matters to your counterpart, you lay the foundation for genuine trust.

Connection: The Art of First Impressions

How many questions do you ask before you actually know where to take a conversation? Earning trust and establishing credibility requires mastering the art of the question.

Danny coaches individuals and organizations on a concept called the Persuasion Blueprint. The strategy involves gaining gentle control of a conversation early on by asking the right open-ended questions, thereby establishing rapport and demonstrating empathy. Once that baseline of comfort is set, you can shift to closed-ended questions to unearth the deeper, emotional drivers behind a person’s behavior.

Collaboration: Inviting Them to the Table

The final pillar of the blueprint is where you bring your counterpart to your side of the table. When people participate in crafting a solution, they take ownership of it. They become committed to the outcome.

This is where you must actively resist expert override. Slow down. Give your colleague, donor, or client the space to articulate their thoughts, even if you have heard the same feedback a thousand times before. Treating a leadership moment as a dialogue rather than a TED Talk ensures that your team feels valued and invested in the path forward.

Ever wondered what unleashing your inner second grader could teach you about leadership? And fundraising?

It turns out quite a bit!

When we become adults, we want to look good and avoid looking bad. We become complex. We move away from who we were as children.

But children offer raw and unfiltered perspectives. They offer authenticity.

And those traits can profoundly shape our approach to leadership. In this episode, Margaret and David explore the invaluable lessons we can learn from unleashing what’s still unfiltered and raw about us . .

Introduction to Authenticity:

  • The conversation starts with a discussion about how our egos and personas protect us. At the same time, they also create barriers.
  • They ponder, how might the qualities of uninhibited and authentic be valuable in professional settings?

Lessons from Second Graders:

  • David shares stories from his wife’s classroom (she’s a second-grade teacher). David took a page out of one of her student’s book. That kiddo described putting his Crocs into “sport mode” for recess. That in turn inspired David to wear his own Crocs in “airplane mode” while travelling.

Challenges of Inauthenticity:

  • Margaret recounts an incident where her son’s innocent question about someone’s weight, though awkward, was entirely genuine.

The Lifeboat Exercise:

  • Margaret and David discuss an exercise called “lifeboat” from their own leadership training. In this exercise, participants must authentically pitch why they should be saved in a hypothetical survival scenario.
  • From this exercise, they learned what happens when adults try to be chosen. They witnessed how the adults masked their true selves to avoid looking bad. That led to inauthentic interactions. And such interactions make us less compelling.
  • The exercise demonstrates how inauthentic behavior can lead to failure. Authenticity, on the other hand, resonates and compels others.

Authenticity in Fundraising:

  • They discuss their program, “Being a Mega Gifts Fundraiser.”  The course teaches fundraisers to be genuine, which exponentially enhances their effectiveness.
  • Sometimes fundraisers tend towards over-calibrating to seem smart or be overly pleasing. These traits often come off as insincere.

Practical Applications:

  • David and Margaret encourage fundraisers to express themselves more genuinely. Some examples of being more genuine might include cracking jokes, being honest about limitations, and showing enthusiasm.
  • Margaret shares a personal story about a donor asking a provocative question. The response from her meeting companion was stiff and not really true. A straight answer would have gone better, and it was a missed fundraising opportunity.

Encouragement:

  • The speakers advocate for training board members and fundraisers to embody authenticity and tap into their “inner second graders.” This is a way for board members to be more confident and willing fundraisers.
  • They emphasize that being playful and genuine can lead to more successful and fulfilling interactions.

Conclusion:

Much like the uninhibited nature of second graders, authenticity is crucial for building trust and compelling others in professional settings.

David and Margaret urge listeners to listen to their own inner urges more often.

Ethical Compensation and Rewards in Fundraising

I had just moved back to Toronto. The world was still mostly closed due to the global pandemic, and interacting with others in person was not really something people were doing.

In this new role, I was tasked to help raise funds for our Indigenous Innovation Initiative. It’s an incredible program looking to use an innovative approach to support Indigenous communities to develop and scale ideas and support them to solve the challenges most important to their communities. Tugging at Some Threads: Looking for Inspiration In All the Different Places

At some point six or seven years ago, I lost interest in books about fundraising, blogs about fundraising, podcasts about fundraising, presentations about fundraising, and so on. I felt some guilt about this because I know how hard my peers work to gather and share their knowledge. I wondered if it was a sign that maybe I should step away and pursue a whole new profession. I still enjoyed my work though, especially interacting with donors. I also still felt like there was so much ground for our profession to cover. So, I struck a balance by staying focused at work, while outside the office I began tugging at some threads that had been within reach for decades but never pulled. [Read more…]
